Why Write about Reading?

When I was around sixteen, a senior boy whom I had been secretly enamored with nearly my entire life bragged to his friends from the back of the bus, “I haven’t read a single book throughout high school.” Laughter ensued, and everyone probably reflected that if a straight-A student didn’t have to read the books Mr. Phillips assigned (yes, he was the only English teacher for ALL of us!), they didn’t have to either.

I, however, winced (inwardly, of course) at the thought that this dreamy guy didn’t share my love for all things reading. Little did I know that this scene would play out in front of my eyes many more times throughout college and as I became a high school English teacher.

Lots of people don’t read the book. So what?

The answer to that question is so complex, broad, deep, and, dare I say, critical, that I have decided it is worth blogging about.

I hope you will join me! I invite you to engage in the comments! What types of topics would you like to hear about? What are some of your reading struggles? Do you have any good stories about your own reading life?
